Lanten Stink Horns

How do you get rid of the mongrel things.

I have these horrible Lantern Stink Horns that have suddenly appearing on our lawn. The area where these things are appearing is an area that had a tree growing there and it was removed and the stump was ground out and then we planted some buffalo turf there.

I want to know if there is any members here that know how to get rid of them.

They are the fruiting body of an underground fungi, same as the mushrooms that we eat.  The fungi would be growing on the remnants of that tree stump that was ground out.  The fruiting bodies will not last that long, although you can pull, bag and dispose of them if you want.  They will probably come back again next year and for several years after until the fungus has exhausted the tree root remnants nutritional supply.  Not much you can do about that unless you want to physically dig out remaining roots.

On Saturday we decided to put a garden fork under a couple of the stink horns and lift the grass up. It was interesting that we exposed a white moldy looking lump so we bagged this and kept digging. It was really surprising how many of these 'parent eggs' we discarded.

Horrible things.
